There are not many times in one’s life when there are great transitions under way that will shape the long term future for good or ill. We are at one such point right now that I believe will have profound implications for the Kingdom of God not just in the United States but around the world.
This centers on the agenda of the Democratic controlled Congress and the Obama White House and finds its full expressions in the health care reform bill. I know that I am going to get some of you mad by expressing my opinion about this, but after much careful reading of The Wall Street Journal and prayer, I feel compelled to share my concerns and to ask you to join with me in praying.
Everyone knows that we need health care reform but what is proposed in this bill, that President Obama is demanding be passed with utmost haste, contains many elements that should cause Christians grave concern. There are spiritual and moral dimensions to the massive government programs that will be created that must be carefully discerned and brought into the light.
There are other aspects of “Obama care” that fit a pattern of growing government intrusion into every aspect of life and the creation of deficits in the trillions of dollars that threaten not only our liberties insured by the Constitution but also our long term viability as a nation. Nations have crashed because of too much debt and high taxes. With the exception of the “Blue Dogs” the Democratic controlled Congress and White House seem determined to press their social agenda regardless of the financial cost.
My concern and misgivings are not fired by prophecies of doom that have been sounded by some, but by a daily reading of The Wall Street Journal.
Week after week the writers in The Wall Street Journal have provided careful analysis of the contents as well as the constitutional, philosophical, social and financial implications of the Bill which is before Congress. Their careful reporting and analysis have inspired me to urgent prayer, deep concern and opposition to what is proposed.
While Congress is in recess I believe we must pray urgently and consistently. The Holy Spirit is the one who will direct you in your prayers. I am led to pray the following:
1. That the brakes will be put on this whole process so that there will be time for a true bi- partisan solution to the health care challenges facing the United States to be worked out.
2. That those places where this health care reform movement will lead the United States into unsustainable deficit spending and prosperity-destroying taxation will be exposed and halted.
3. That those places where this bill represents a usurpation of our rights and freedoms given and assured to us in the Constitution will be exposed.
I believe we are at a crisis point and it is urgent that we do the work of intercession. The following is a 6 minute video I have put together on this issue. Please join me in prayer!
