The Divine Human Cooperation in Great Awakenings

I am so excited about what the Holy Spirit is doing in this most extraordinary time.  

On the one hand, we are witnessing the alarming rise of evil around the world. Tensions are high on every continent.  People are still dealing with the pandemic, and numbers are rising again. Division and uncertainty in the US have never been worse. This is especially true since the 2020 American Presidential Election when I believe a demonic invasion took place advancing anti-God ideologies. 

At the same time, there are signs that we are moving into what I believe will be a Third Great Awakening. This could be the End Times outpouring of the Holy Spirit completing the Great Commission in this generation. In this Discerning the Times, I want to explore why awakenings take place.   We know that they come from God, but we who have been born again into the Kingdom of God have a role.  What is that role?

Praying for True Revival

This period between Easter and Pentecost is especially critical this year with the Coronavirus Pandemic. I believe we are called to pray in the next great outpouring of the Holy Spirit, which will defeat Satan’s plans and will take the world closer to fulfilling the Great Commission of the Gospel of Jesus Christ going to all nations. A critical component advancing the Kingdom of God is Christians praying for and receiving the baptism with the Holy Spirit as promised us by Jesus in Acts 1:4-8.

Praying for a New Wave of the Holy Spirit Bringing Revival in the Northeast

There seems to be the beginning of a new wave of the Holy Spirit in the Northeast of the United States. This is the area that led the way in past revivals but in recent years has been much of the source of movements leading the church away from her biblical roots.  But now there are signs pointing to a new stream of the Holy Spirit at work, that I believe we are called to join in praying will become a river of revival and transformation.

Over the years PRMI people such as the late Tom Manetsch prayed for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit in this area. His wife, Edna, and he did prayer walks on the campus of Harvard University and other citadels of liberal progressivism in the Northeast.  Steve Thayer, past PRMI Board President and the pastor of a Presbyterian congregation situated not far from the site of Jonathan Edwards’ revival ministry, has prayed for a new outpouring of the Holy Spirit.  No doubt there are thousands of others whom the Lord has called to join in this great symphony of prayer for revival.

There are signs of our Father moving to answer this past work of prayer with a new wave of the Holy Spirit.  One of the catalysts that may be sparking this revival fire in the Northeast is our event called Renewing the Legacy of R.A. Torrey at the Montrose Bible Conference in PA . Another spark may be the Ignite at Brighton Presbyterian Church in Rochester, NY to take place sometime in October.  I think this is a call to intercessory prayer in cooperation with the Holy Spirit.
