An Unpopular Assignment
What if God calls a Christian to an unpopular assignment? Not unprecedented biblically, since God called Jonah to an assignment he ran from, only to be chastened and returned to the task.
During the highly divisive political season prior to the USA 2016 election, Dr. Long was led step by step into increasing involvement in prayer to battle for a man’s soul – a man who was not his choice for President, and whom he did not like, Facing down his own doubt, arguments, and those of others, he persevered in prayer.
Brad describes this prayer crucible that lost him friends and colleagues as he surrendered to God’s assignment, working to involve a small team to move beyond politics into “the place of intercession.” These lessons are vital for intercessors to learn. As Long states, “The vanguard of this spiritual and cultural war for the should of the nation and the souls of its citizens and leaders are the intercessors.”
A profound principle illustrated in this spiritual battle is “the place of intercession.” This biblical concept, modelled by the prophet Amos, is a dynamic cooperation with the Holy Spirit that transcends human politics and advances God’s kingdom in our fallen world. Intercessors will find that as they learn to step into this dynamic, they will play a role in shaping History.
